When you go to a distant country, you often have pricking necessary to protect yourself against illness.

The vaccinations you need depend on the country you are travelling to. Check in good time what you need to arrange so that you are well prepared for your trip.

Why vaccinations when travelling?

Some countries have different diseases than the United Kingdom. These diseases can make you very ill. You can get a jab to protect yourself against some of these diseases. This is also called an inoculation or vaccination. The jabs reduce your chances of getting these diseases. And if you do get the diseases, you will usually not become seriously ill.

When are vaccinations required?

If you are travelling to one of these places, you may need a vaccination or inoculation:

  • Africa
  • Asia
  • The Middle East
  • Central and South America
  • some countries in Europe

Whether you need a vaccination depends on the following factors:

  • The country you are travelling to
  • which vaccinations you have already received

Check at least three months in advance whether you need any vaccinations and, if so, which ones. Sometimes you need to have the jab more than once. Or sometimes the jab only takes effect after a while.
